Daughter and mother embrace.

To all the caregivers out there, we at EasyCall salute you!

It’s a big responsibility to care for a loved one as they age. Your life can seem like it’s put on hold as you take on this vital duty.

Know that you’re not alone. More than 34 million Americans providing some form of care to loved ones. According to an AARP and Family Caregiver Alliance study, the average caregiver is 50 years old and is likely a member of the “donut” generation, meaning they’re providing care to a parent and their own children. Talk about a stressful situation!

That’s why it’s so important to take care of yourself when you’re in charge of the care of others. And frankly, it can be hard to remember that if we’re not taking care of ourselves, we can’t give our best to those we love.

With that in mind, here are three tips to help make sure you’re getting the support and care you need to be your best.

Find Local Support

In Humboldt County, local church groups, the county library, the Adorni Center, the Fortuna Senior Center, and the Humboldt Senior Resource Center are just a few among many organizations that can help provide care and services for the senior in your life. Make the most of these opportunities and get involved today.

Get Social

Facebook and the internet are full of forums and groups for caregivers who share tips and give a space to share (and vent) about the joys and frustrations of caring for elderly loved ones. Don’t hesitate to get online and share your thoughts and feelings about this important task.

Take Care of Yourself

It can be hard, but putting yourself first is key to being available physically, mentally, and emotionally for your loved ones. Start with a stress-reduction practice like yoga, prayer, or Tai Chi. Get plenty of exercise and take a day off when possible. Most importantly, when you’re feeling run down or sick, take care of your own health first. The more you focus on yourself, the more ready you’ll be to be an outstanding caregiver.
